About the IIP Certification Test

Individuals who pass the Imaging Informatics Professional (IIP) certification test can refer to themselves as a Certified Imaging Informatics Professional® (CIIP®).

More About the Test

  • The test registration fee is $500
  • The retake fee is $250, and candidates are allowed three attempts in 12 months to pass the test.
  • The test is composed of 170 questions that cover 10 major knowledge domains identified by imaging informatics professionals as being critical to competent performance in the field.
    • Review these sample test questions, which are similar in format to those in the examinations.
    • The IIP certification test is based on content included in the ABII Test Content Outline, which provides more detailed information on the subject areas included in the test.
  • The maximum time allowed to complete the test is 2.83 hours (170 minutes). Twenty additional minutes are allotted for:
    • An eight minute tutorial
    • A two-minute non-disclosure agreement before the test
    • And 10 minutes for a survey at the end of the test
ABII maintains test statistics, including pass rates.

Scheduling a test

Once a candidate meets eligibility requirements and registers for the IIP certification test, they'll be able to schedule their test. The candidate will:
  • Schedule their test directly with Pearson VUE, an independent testing center with locations throughout the world.
  • Take their test at a time convenient for them either at a Pearson VUE professional center, or at home on a computer while a remote proctor monitors their progress.
  • Please note: The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) contracts with Pearson VUE on behalf of ABII. Because of this, Pearson VUE test center personnel and scheduling representatives will refer to the ABII and the IIP test as ARRT and the ARRT test.

Canceling or Rescheduling Your Test Appointment

  • Candidates may cancel or re-schedule an appointment up to 24 hours (one business day) prior to the scheduled appointment. Please see the Certification Guide for more details on canceling and missed appointments.
  • If circumstances make it impossible for a candidate to attend their scheduled exam, they may cancel their Pearson VUE appointment and request a postponement with ABII.
    • ABII must receive postponement requests seven days before the test administration date.
    • Candidates who submit postponement requests less than seven days before the test must submit a re-examination form and fee of $250.
    • Candidates are allowed up to three postponements before having to re-apply.

Testing Accommodations

Accommodations are ways of adapting a testing experience to meet the needs of people who have disabilities that may impair their exam performance. ABII complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and provides reasonable testing accommodations to candidates who demonstrate that they have an ADA-qualifying disability. Candidates:

  • Must submit the necessary documentation to be considered for testing accommodations.
  • Will receive a testing window after the accommodations request has been submitted, reviewed, and approved.
  • Must wait to schedule their test until accommodations are approved. (If they don't, they'll have to take their exam without accommodations.)

Detailed ADA Testing Accommodations information and application are available after registering for the test.

For more information about gaining eligibility, applying for or taking the IIP test, read the ABII Certification Guide.
